During the 1950s and 60s research was carried out into the effects of psychedelic drugs. In some places they were even used as cures for anxiety and depression. However as the use of LSD and Ecstasy as a recreational drug began to increase, studies into the possible beneficial effects of the drugs were suspended amid fears that taking them would cause mental illness' such as schizophrenia.
This week it has been reported that there is to be a resurgence of research into the possible therapeutic benefits of the drugs LSD and Ecstasy. This has come as good news to people who take the drug as they may soon be able to get the psychedelics from their doctor, rather than having to purchase it illegally.
It has also come to light this week that there are a community of people that passes the drugs between users on the basis of need and support, with money rarely being involved.
These studies into the medical benefits could be a massive significance for anyone who suffers from a variety of conditions and this could be a big step forward in the field of medical science.
While obviously there would need to be extensive testing into the effects of taking the drugs, there are bound to be many objections from various groups who wont agree with the use of 'dangerous' drugs as a cure for common medical problems.
It is important to remember that while these drugs may be illegal, if handled with care, they would be no more dangerous than many other therapies. Some academics studying the effects are already arguing that no drug will ever be completely safe, illegal or medical.
If the new studies prove to be a success the Government will have no option but to downgrade the class of drug that LSD falls into as it is currently classified as a Class A, schedule 1 substance – which means not only is it considered highly dangerous, but also that it is deemed to have no medical research value.
